Chain and drivetrain service

Adjustment, cleaning, lubrication and full chain-and-sprocket replacement. On most jobs the chain gets checked and corrected on the way out whether you asked for it or not.

A chain that is too tight loads the output shaft bearing. A chain that is too loose slaps the swingarm and can jump a sprocket. Both wear the sprockets into hooks, and once the sprockets are hooked, a new chain will not save them — the set has to go together.

  • Slack set to the manufacturer's spec for your bike, not a rule of thumb.
  • Rear wheel alignment checked at the same time.
  • Sprockets inspected for hooking and uneven wear.
  • Chain and sprockets replaced as a set, because mixing new and worn destroys the new part.
  • Checked and adjusted as part of most other jobs, at no extra charge.

How often should a motorcycle chain be adjusted?
It depends on the bike and how you ride, but checking it every few hundred miles is reasonable. A chain stretches fastest when it is new and when it is neglected.
Do I have to replace sprockets with the chain?
Usually, yes. Worn sprockets have hooked teeth that will chew through a new chain quickly. Fitting a new chain to worn sprockets is a false economy.
Do you charge to check the chain?
Not when your bike is already in for other work. It gets checked and adjusted on the way out as a matter of course.
Can you work on belt or shaft drive bikes?
Yes. Blackwood Cycles works on Harley, metric and sport bikes, which covers chain, belt and shaft final drive.
